In terms of the world's greatest wine list, vintage Port holds a high position. The vineyards of Portugal's Douro Valley produce the world's finest Port wine. Unlike other wine regions that employ fancy wine making techniques and equipment, in the Douro Valley wine is made much in the same way as it was one hundred years ago.
A good way to relax and reminiscent during the holidays is to enjoy a hot drink of Port and lemon juice. During the holidays you can offer your guests a Hot Port Toddy to take away winter's chill. This is a welcome and delicious change of pace from hot apple cider or mulled wine.
There are several different Port-style wines manufactured in other countries. The best Port wine and the only one that has the distinction of being called "Porto," is named for the city of Oporto near the beginning of Rio Douro or "River of Gold" in Portugal. Be sure you ask for genuine Port wine when you purchase your wine to make the hot drink of Port and lemon juice.
The history of the enjoyment of hot drinks made with alcohol is just as impressive although the hot drink Port and lemon juice is not as common as others. This works in your favor because your guests will appreciate the opportunity to sample such a delightful beverage. Combining the robust flavor of Port wine with spices and the zing of lemon is sure to bring you many compliments.
For this recipe of Hot Port Wine Toddy you will need the following to make 6 servings:
* Six cups Port wine
* Three apples, peeled, pared and thinly sliced
* Two teaspoons of cinnamon
* Three whole cloves
* One quarter cup sugar
* One teaspoon lemon juice
* Orange slices for garnish

You will need a large saucepan. First place the apples, spices, sugar and lemon juice in the saucepan and cover with the Port wine. Bring to a rapid boil and reduce the heat. Cook at a simmer for 30 minutes. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth and return to saucepan. Reheat for 20 minutes. Serve in ceramic mugs garnished with an orange slice.
